Welcome to the Shire of Mundaring, where we have over 100 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry! The Mundaring Weir Hotel and the Mahogany Inn were both opened for business in the early 1900s, Darlington was the site of one of the State' s first wineries, and the magical water pipeline was opened in 1902! Even in those days the people of Perth would come ' up and over the hill to take in the clean air'.
The Shire of Mundaring covers an area of 644 sq. km of which nearly half is State Forest or Reserves. Our villages are steeped in a rich history, closely linked by the old railway line that is now the fabulous Railway Reserve Heritage Trail stretching some 70km through the shire. The amazing engineering feat that is the Mundaring Weir with the pipeline to the Eastern Goldfields region is also here.
The Munda Biddi Bike Trail starts in the town of Mundaring , and there are several other cycling trails too. A wide range of accommodation is available, ranging from luxury five star retreats to camping at Lake Leschenaultia . Fine food from award-winning restaurants, the worlds best pizza, wineries, arts and wildlife are also features of our Shire. We are home to the Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary, the Chidlow Marsupial Hospital and the Perth Hills National Parks Centre.
Tourism is a vibrant and growing part of the region, with nature-based activities and facilities a priority. We offer the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle without the long drive; we are just 40 minutes from the Perth CBD. So, come on up the Great Eastern Highway , over the Greenmount Hill and into the tranquil natural environment that is Mundaring, the Heart of the Hills.
