Environmental recovery marked with interpretive signs

FOUR new interpretive signs have been installed along the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail to show the recovery from a major fire.

Shire President David Lavell said the Parkerville, Stoneville, Mount Helena Bushfire in 2014 caused significant environmental damage in the area.

"As the final project in the Environmental Recovery Project, these signs were designed to show the resilience of our native vegetation to a major fire," he said.

"The signs are spaced along the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail between Parkerville and Mount Helena and detail barriers to regeneration, how homes for wildlife were created and the role of local Friends Groups and community in aiding recovery."

Cr Lavell said the signs were designed by local artist Melinda Brezmen.

"The signs are very fitting with our environment and are made with locally sourced materials," he said.

"They also complement the interpretive signage on the trail heads which acknowledge the community spirit in the face of the natural disaster.

"The Shire is proud to have co-ordinated this project and believe they will provide the community a greater understanding of our environment's ability to adapt and respond in the face of adversity."

As part of the environmental recovery a number of projects were undertaken including the creation and installation of nesting boxes in affected areas. A number of workshops were run with the community.

The project was jointly funded by Lotterywest, the State Natural Resource Management and Shire of Mundaring.
