Ideal time to plant TCUP seedlings

RESIDENTS are encouraged to plant their seedlings from Shire of Mundaring's Tree Canopy and Understorey Program (TCUP) before July.

This year the Shire provided 52,000 free native seedlings to local residents, ratepayers and community groups.

Environment and Sustainability Co-ordinator Toni Burbidge said June was the perfect time to plant trees and groundcover.

"These seedlings will grow to strong healthy plants if they are given some extra attention in the early stages," she said.

"Planting during June means there is plenty of rain and this will give the seedlings the best chance of becoming established before summer."

More than a thousand successful applicants attended the Shire Operations Centre to collect their allocated plants, with TCUP distribution running over a three week period.

"Our first weekend got off to a slow start with torrential weather putting a stop to collections," Mrs Burbidge said.

"We hope June still sees plenty of rain to help with planting, so these seedlings will grow and provide habitat for native animals, as well as creating waterwise and sustainable gardens."

All seedlings have now been allocated and collected. To help residents with planting, a Planting Guide is available here or by phoning 9290 6641.
