THERE'S no reining in the enthusiasm of the Mundaring Men's Shed who have a team of hobby horses for the upcoming Great Hobby Horse Race.
The much anticipated event will be held on the Habits of Horses Open Day on Sunday, 20 August at Sculpture Park in Mundaring.
Shire President David Lavell said the unique event, hosted by Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC), was sure to attract local residents and visitors to the area.
"I am pleased the Shire of Mundaring has been able to offer ongoing support to MAC over the years so they can continue to offer the community a fantastic experience," he said.
Cr Lynn Fisher, who will be participating in Habits of Horses with Riding for the Disabled, said members of the Men's Shed had put a significant amount of work into preparing for the event.
"Working in collaboration with artist Sarah Zel Chescoe, this talented group has also created two unique horse hitching posts for Mundaring, in addition to the 75 hobby horses for the Great Hobby Horse Race," she said. "There are hobby horses to cater for both children and adults so it should make for an exciting event."
The Men's Shed is one of many local groups involved in Habits of Horses. Project coordinator Jude van der Merwe said the project would provide an opportunity for the community to come together and explore their relationship with horses, acquire new art skills, and learn more about their history.
To help mark the Habits of Horses Open Day, the Mundaring Men's Shed will open its doors to the public between 10am and 4pm so people can see some of the fantastic work they do. Also, artists will be in nearby Mundaring Sculpture Park from 10am giving people an opportunity to decorate a hobby horse, a dressage top hat or have their face painted like a horse. Then they'll be off and racing, jumping over a series of hand-crafted hobby horse jumps, made by local artist Denise Brown.
Cr Lavell encouraged everyone to take part in the Great Hobby Horse Race. "There's a selection of prizes on offer including the Magic Millions Grand Prize and more importantly, it promises to be a lot of fun," he said. Heats take place between 2pm and 3pm.
