WA Naturally Thanks You for not littering

Motorists driving along the stretch of the Great Eastern Highway in Mundaring may notice two new signs thanking people in advance for doing the right thing with their rubbish.

The signs, which feature the message WA Naturally Thanks You, were installed as part of the Regional Roadside Litter Prevention Project. The $185,000 project is supported by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (WA) and Main Roads Western Australia and it will continue until the end of the year.

Shire President David Lavell said the project focuses on an issue important to the Shire and encourages people to dispose of their rubbish in the correct manner by promoting a sense of personal responsibility.

Cr Lavell said he was confident that thanking people in advance would help improve long-term littering behaviour to keep the environment clean. "This initiative, together with the State Government's recently announced Container Deposit Scheme, will make a significant difference within the Shire."

The innovative project includes complimentary litter bags at some roadhouses in the local area. In the Mundaring region, the bags are available at Puma Mundaring, Puma Sawyers Valley and Puma El Caballo. The Keep Australia Beautiful Council will also survey drivers at the roadhouses to gauge their perspective towards littering.

Results from the 2015-16 National Litter Index confirmed that roadsides continue to attract high volumes of litter and are the source of most of the litter found in WA.

Cr Lavell said the Shire welcomed the initiative. "We are confident the WA Naturally Thanks You campaign will assist towards reducing the occurrence of litter in our unique and beautiful environment."
