Retaining Walls

A Retaining Wall is a structure designed and constructed to support soil at a slope steeper than can be naturally supported (the angle of repose). Retaining walls, when located adjacent to or up to common boundaries can be large and costly items, and often require cost-sharing with adjoining landowners.

Each landowner has an obligation to retain soil where necessary resulting from earthworks on their property. Adjoining landowners who have undertaken earthworks are advised to attempt to negotiate a proportional based agreement when retaining walls are required along a common boundary. All retaining walls that exceed 500mm in height are to be designed by a Structural Engineer. Applications for such retaining walls are to be accompanied by signed Structural Engineer's drawings, specific for the site in question.
