Biodiversity
Home > Resident Services > Environment > Biodiversity

Biodiversity is another term for the variety of nature. There are three different levels of Biodiversity namely: Species diversity , which is the variety of species on earth (plants, animals, bacteria etc); Genetic diversity , which is the variety of genetic information within and between populations of species and is the basis of continuing evolution, adaptability and survival of species; and Ecosystem diversity , which is the variety of habitats, biotic communities and ecological processes. Some of the direct threats to the biodiversity in the Shire of Mundaring include:

  • Weeds and Pest Animals
  • Habitat Fragmentation, Disturbance and Disease Invasion
  • Erosion and Hydrological Imbalances
  • Inappropriate Fire Regimes
  • Excessive Nutrients and Pollutants
  • Using Inappropriate Propagation Material
  • Firewood Collection
  • Lack of Awareness of Biodiversity Importance

Weed Control Strategy (2002)

A ‘weed' is a plant that has been found growing outside of its original geographical region. Weeds are generally extremely prolific and very hardy. They have no natural predators or growth limiting diseases to control their spread.

The Shire of Mundaring has recently completed a Draft Local Biodiversity Strategy which is available for Public Comment.

The strategy identifies the Shire’s local natural areas, proposes goals and targets for retention and long-term protection of local natural areas, and actions to achieve those targets.

It is intended that the strategy will be implemented through the Shire’s new Local Planning Strategy and Town Planning Scheme No 4.  This strategy will address protection of biodiversity in local natural areas and form an important input into the Scheme and Local Planning Strategy.

A copy of the strategy is available for viewing at the Shire Libraries or Administration Office.  For further information, contact Stuart Thiele, Senior Planning Officer (Strategic) on 9290 6666.

Submissions may be addressed to The Environmental Officer C/- Shire of Mundaring, 7000 Great Eastern Highway, Mundaring WA 6073. Submissions Close 6 July 2009.
