Friends Group Strategy

The Shire of Mundaring recognises the enormous efforts volunteers provide to the natural environment and has developed a Friends Group Strategy and Friends Group Manual that provides the basis for supporting Friends Groups and volunteers.

Activities such as weed control, restoration planting, erosion and dieback management are undertaken.  Social activities are also encouraged and it is not unusual for everyone to stop for a yarn over morning tea, then dive back into the bush maintenance with renewed enthusiasm.  The Shire also provides resources, recognition, an annual volunteer lunch, Bush Skills or the Hills Workshops, Greenpage Newsletter and networking morning teas for Friends Groups throughout the year.

If you are interested in the care of Bushland Reserves and wish to join or establish a Friends Group, please contact the Shire's Bushcare Coordinator on 9290 6685.

Friends groups/Catchment groups

One of the attractions of living in the Eastern Hills Region is the magnificent surrounding bushland.  To help conserve and restore this natural beauty, community assistance and participation is needed.  The control of weeds by the community in local bushland reserves is a significant component to successful bushland regeneration.  It requires ongoing commitment and awareness of the cause of the problem in order to provide a long term solution.

The Shire of Mundaring encourages community involvement in weed control programs on Council controlled reserves.  The restoration of bushland has many benefits, environmentally and socially.  Native vegetation provides habitat for fauna, naturally filters water supplies, protects the soil from erosion, and can be used for recreation.

Who are they? Friends and Catchment Groups are groups of volunteers who undertake bushcare activities in reserves and on private property in Perth's Eastern Hills Region.

What do they do? Friends' Groups - Look after bushland on reserves by planting native trees, weeding and generally managing the area.  Catchment Groups - Manage natural resources across the region and on private property around rivers or water bodies.
