Fencing Requirements
Home > Resident Services > Building > Fencing Requirements

Fences and Retaining Walls are classified as building under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1960.  It is necessary to apply to the Building Service for a Building Licence to erect or reconstruct a front boundary fence that is not in accordance with Council's Local law relating to fencing.

A copy of Council's Local Law relating to fencing can be obtained from the Customer Service counter or in Related Links.

Council does not administer the Dividing Fences Act but does have appropriate information prepared by the department of Local Government that provides assistance and guidelines for specific actions relevant to the erection, maintenance and payments relating to a dividing fence between two property owners.
