All Swimming Pools and Spas require Building Approval.
Every four years all Local Governments undertake at least one inspection of all private swimming pools in its district, as instructed by the appropriate State Government statutes. This is to ensure that suitable restrictive barriers are in place to prevent children from drowning.
Safety barriers are required to restrict access to a private swimming pool by young children from both outside the property and within buildings on the property. Barriers may include fences, gates, modified doors and windows. All such barriers shall comply with the requirements as specified by the appropriate Australian Standards.
Note: Modified doors opening onto a pool enclosure have not been allowed since November 5th 2001.
The latest swimming pool legislative requirements are detailed at the Department of Housing and Works website. See Related Links.
