Making the Australian Citizenship Pledge is the final step in becoming and Australian Citizen, and the Shire of Mundaring is proud to welcome those who have made this journey.

Your first step in applying to become an Australia Citizen is to contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship on 13 18 80 or by visiting their website on www.citizenship.gov.au.

Applications must be lodged at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Public Citizenship Ceremonies will be held on the following dates:

  • Thursday 2 July 2009
  • Thursday 6 May 2009
  • Thursday 27 August 2009

Frequently Asked Questions on Citizenship

When and where are Citizenship Ceremonies held?
Citizenship ceremonies are held every 12 - 14 weeks at the Shire of Mundaring Civic Area.  Registration is from 5.30pm, with the ceremony commencing at 6pm.

How long does the Citizenship ceremony run for?
The Citizenship Ceremony will run for approximately 1 hour. After the ceremony, candidates and guests are invited to stay for drinks and refreshments.

Do I have to bring anything with me to the ceremony?
Please bring a form of identification, Drivers License, Passport etc.

Do I have to remember any speech or pledge prior to the ceremony?
No. When you first applied for your Australian Citizenship through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, would have been asked if you wanted to make an oath or affirmation pledge. The Shire of Mundaring will be advised of your preference and will present you with a pledge card upon your name being called at the ceremony to read from.

If I chose to make an oath pledge, can I bring my own bible?
The Shire of Mundaring encourages people to bring any religious books that they would like to make an oath on. Bibles will no longer be provided at ceremonies by the Shire of Mundaring.

When will I receive the details confirming my ceremony?
The Shire of Mundaring endeavors to give candidates as much notice as possible of your ceremony date, with an invitation being sent out at least 6 weeks prior to the ceremony date.

Will I receive my certificate at the Ceremony?
Yes. Once the candidates have been invited and accepted the invitation to the ceremony, the Shire of Mundaring is required to order the Citizenship Certificates from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship four weeks prior to the ceremony. The certificates are printed in Canberra and then sent to the Shire of Mundaring for the ceremony.

How can I find out when my Citizenship Ceremony will be?
Citizenship Ceremonies are gauged by a Conferral Planning Reports sent to the Shire of Mundaring once a month from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Once these reports are received by the Shire, you will then be booked onto the next available ceremony. An invitation will then be sent to you from the Shire of Mundaring.

What is the waiting time for a ceremony?
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship advises that once you have received the approval letter from the Department of Immigration, the waiting time can be between four to six months.

How many quests can I bring to the ceremony?
The Shire of Mundaring allows 2 adult guests per person. Children are an exception.

Is it possible to arrange a Private Citizenship Ceremony?
Private Ceremonies are only allowed in the most exceptional circumstances. Unless the Shire of Mundaring is advised by the Department of Immigration that a private ceremony is required then a letter addressed to the Office of the Shire President, stating the reason for the urgency required with all private ceremonies. What are the fees to apply for Australian Citizenship?
The fees range from $65 and $240 depending on the type of Citizenship you are applying for. Fees are made payable to the Department of Immigration. Before applying applicants are advised to ring the Citizenship Information Line on 131 880 to confirm the fees.

I have lost my citizenship certificate, what should I do?
In an instance when you have lost your Citizenship Certificate, you will need to contact the Department of Immigration on 131 881 to arrange a replacement. The Shire of Mundaring is unable to replace this certificate.

Do children need to attend citizenship ceremonies?
Children aged 16 years and over are legally required to attend their citizenship ceremony and take the citizenship pledge in order to become an Australian citizen. Children under the age of 16 are not legally required to take the citizenship pledge, however are welcome to attend the ceremony and are encouraged to take the citizenship pledge where possible.
