School Program

Encourage Kids to be Active

Kids love to be active, and active kids are healthy kids. Encouraging children to be active when they are young also establishes a routine that can stay with them throughout their lives. The Shire of Mundaring encourages all children to be active and that is one of the reasons they are making the the 10,000 Steps Challenge available to schools within the Shire. During November 2006 Greenmount Primary School participated in a pilot program of the 10,000 Steps Challenge. A class of years 6 & 7 enthusiastically embraced the program and some of the results were fantastic. The enthusiasm for the program by both students and staff was really exciting, and paved the way for the program to be expanded in 2007. Other schools that have particpated in the program are: Glen Forrest Primary School,  Sacred Heart Primary School and Mundaring Primary School.

Each class participant received a resource kit specifically designed for their age group including some great giveaways. Each child also received use of a free loan pedometer for the two or four week program and log book to record their number of steps daily. One of the responses after the program ended was " It really made me think about how much exercise I do, and at the end of each day I wanted to have beaten my score from the day before. I loved doing the program, next time mum is going to do it with me".

If your school is interested in participating in the Shire of Mundarings 10,000 Step Challenge please contact:
