Profile of Young People in the Shire

SEEN AND HEARD YOUTH SERVICE

Seen and Heard is a program funded by the Shire of Mundaring and delivered to the community via Parkerville Children and Youth Care. This FREE service is available for young people aged between 12 - 18 years and who reside in the Shire of Mundaring.

Seen and Heard staff work with young people to create local events and recreational activities whilst developing confidence and skills. Seen and Heard staff can provide support with relationships, school, work and health and are able to make referrals when appropriate.

Parkerville Children and Youth Care has been providing services for young people, families and the community with physical, emotional, educational, social and spiritual needs since 1903.

Services
:

Stratton Youth Centre
Centre Based Services are provided to young people aged 12 to 18 years who may be experiencing a range of complex issues including family conflict, truancy, substance misues, social isolation and limited social skills.  Activities available during centre based times include:

·        Pool Competitions

·        Soccer Table

·        Air Hockey Table

·        Music

·        Snacks

·        Computer games

·        Football/other sporting activities

Intensive Support Service (ISS)
The focus of the ISS is to provide a one to one support service for young people with complex health and related issues, for example substance misuse, mental illness and accommodation difficulties. Priority will be given to young people who are not receiving support through other services and young parents. ISS is an outreach service that provides one to one emotional and practical support, advocacy, information and referral.

Kira House provides crisis accommodation for 14-18 year old young women who are leaving a situation of Domestic Violence. Young women staying at Kira house will be offered assistance with:

·        Emotional and social support;

·        Living Skills;

·        Parenting issues;

·        Information and education to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence so they are better informed about family and domestic violence and the options and resources available.

·        Practical assistance and referrals to access other community services;

·        Informal counselling;

·        Advocacy for the young women when necessary;

·        Case management;

We will focus on the strengths of the young women and work towards achieving their goals

Education Transition Program provides support to 16 and 17 year old young people, who require intensive support to effect meaningful engagement in and maintenance of education/training/employment options. Young people are referred from the Swan participation Team.

Eligibility:

Stratton Youth Centre - Aged between 12 -18 years
Intensive Support Service – Aged between 15-21 years
Kira House – Aged between 14-18 years, escaping domestic violence, with or without children.
Education Transition Program - Aged between 16-17 years

Catchment Area:

All programs - Midland/Hills Region
Kira House – any area

Referral:

Stratton Youth Centre - no referral process.

Intensive Support Service – voluntary participation, referring agency to involve the young person in the referral process. It is essential that the young person has given their consent to the referral, and been included in the referral process.

After receiving a referral, a staff member will contact the young person and conduct a phone interview.
If the young person is accepted into Kira House, transport will be arranged by Kira House or the referring agency.
When the young person arrives at Kira House an orientation will be conducted and the house expectations will be explained to them.

Education Transition Program - referrals only from the Swan Participation Team

Fees:

Stratton Youth Centre: No Cost
Intensive Support Service: No Cost
Kira House: rent assessed on income.
Education Transition Program: No Cost

 

PARENT AND ADOLESCENT COUNSELLING SERVICES

This service is for families, parents, care-givers, and adolescents who are experiencing conflict within parent/adolescent relationships, in the school setting, or with the law.  Counselling is often with the parent/s and adolescent/s in joint sessions but can be with either party separately, according to the need. The service is:

  • mostly operating at Unit 4/42 Mathoura Street, Midvale
  • mobile - clients can be seen in a variety of venues
  • culturally aware
  • confidential
  • provides appropriate links to other services
  • provided by a suitably qualified practitioner
  • free and is funded by the Department for Community Development
