Who can use this free service?

Any registered member of a Shire of Mundaring library.

What do I need to access the Wi-Fi network?

A laptop with a standard wireless LAN card (“WiFi”, 802.11B, G or N devices) should work. A laptop configured to “Obtain an IP address automatically”. We recommend that you make a note of your current laptop settings before making any changes.

What are the terms and conditions?

As a member of the Shire Library Service and a user of this free Wi-Fi service you are acknowledging the terms and conditions below by using the service.
We do not accept responsibility for any loss resulting from delays, non-deliveries, service interruptions, technical difficulties or the transmission of viruses.

When is the Wi-Fi network available?

Wireless access is available during normal opening hours but you should be able to get a connection outside the Greenmount Library in the car park 24/7.

What to do before I log on?

Your download amount is restricted so you MUST turn off any automatic updating on your browser (if you don’t your download amount may be used up before you get to do anything).  For Window users go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates then turn the updater off. It can be turned back on again when you have finished

How do I connect?

Most laptops/notebooks are configured for wireless access and yours should automatically detect our Wi-Fi environment. The network access is “Open” meaning you do not need a WEP key to connect. Some systems will warn about this before connecting. This is normal.Once connected, open your internet browser. You should see the message:

ProCurve  and a prompt for a username  and a password. The username is your library card barcode number (use uppercase letters) and your password is your card PIN (If you have an alpha password all letters MUST be in uppercase). If you do not have a membership please join up. Once you have entered these just click on the Go symbol, and you should be directed to your requested page.  You can now browse normally.

Where can I get help with my wireless connection?

Refer to your user manual or contact your hardware supplier. Library staff cannot provide support to configure your equipment to wireless access.

Can I get a virus from a wireless service?

Viruses come from the Internet so “Yes you can”. Anti-virus security and privacy of information is your responsibility. We strongly recommend that you install virus protection and personal firewalls before you make use of any Wi-Fi connection hot spot.

How safe is the data on my laptop?

The Internet is a public communications network which poses some security risk. Cautious Wi-Fi users may choose not to transmit their credit card information and passwords whilst using a Wi-Fi connection, including ours. We cannot assure the safety of your data when you use either our wired or wireless internet access points.

Are there limits to my download?

Download speed is limited to a maximum of 1500Kbps but actual speed depends on the number of concurrent users and your proximity to the transmitter. You are currently limited to 10MB of downloads per day.  When your limit has been used up your connection will stop and you may be returned to the login page.  Please be aware that if you attempt to watch video or listen to music (e.g. YouTube) you will use up your limit in a few seconds. We offer this service for you to browse web pages. It is not for entertainment or downloads. (Also refer to What to do before I log on?)

How can I increase my signal strength?

Single strength is determined by your proximity to the transmitter. Try changing your location to increase signal strength.

Can I get my email?

Web-based email should work normally.  This includes Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail accessed by their web pages.  Email clients using POP3, IMAP or SMTP will not work through this network.

Can I use peer-to-peer file-sharing programs?

For security reasons some software programs may not work here. Examples that are likely to be affected include, but are not limited to, peer-to-peer file-sharing programs or VPN software. We do not guarantee to support wireless access with any specific software program.

How do I print?

Printing is not available. However, you may wish to consider saving to a USB device and then using one of our wired stations to print from (provided one is available). Printing will cost 20 cents/page.

Will my laptop/notebook still connect to the internet at home or at work?

If you had to change your configuration settings to access our network you may have to change it back to its original setting when you are at home or work.
