CONSTRUCTION of the new Mundaring Recreation Centre is now underway following a breaking of the ground ceremony held today.
Led by Member for Swan Hills Frank Alban MLA and Mundaring Shire President David Lavell, the ceremony marked the building stage of development which will be carried out by Pindan, after being awarded the contract in late 2015.
The $10.1 million state-of-the-art centre received State Government funding of $3 million and further financial support from Bendigo Bank's Mundaring branch and local sporting groups.
At the ceremony, Cr Lavell praised Mundaring residents for their strong community spirit.
"It's great to see our community has had significant input into the planning of the new centre. There was increased demand for high quality community sports facilities - not just in the Shire of Mundaring but also surrounding areas," he said.
The new Mundaring Recreation Centre will comprise several indoor courts, which will cater for several different sports including basketball, netball, hockey, badminton and soccer.
Cr Lavell said the indoor courts would allow for sport to be played all year round increasing the opportunities for players and clubs in and around the local area.
"In addition to the existing outdoor courts, the indoor courts will make sporting activities more pleasant for both the participants and the spectators, especially during winter," he said.
Cr Lavell said the new Mundaring Recreation Centre was a tangible example of how investment in community and sports facilities can benefit the entire community.
"This new centre will provide a strong focal point for the community as well as providing a venue for young people and their parents to gather and enjoy themselves," he said.
The Mundaring Recreation Centre is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2017.
