Broz Park Wetland Restoration Project announced

Broz Park wetland in Helena Valley is set to undergo several restorative works thanks to a new project being delivered by Shire of Mundaring in 2020-21.

The Broz Park Wetland Restoration Project is a partnership initiative made possible with support from the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) and funding from the State Government's Natural Resource Management (State NRM) program.

Aimed at improving water quality and supporting healthy ecosystem functioning, the works will include:

·       removing non-native fish species;

·       installing an artificial water aeration system;

·       revegetating the banks of the wetland to filter nutrients and provide fauna habitat;

·       introducing native fish species into the wetland;

·       educating the community about healthy wildlife interactions; and

·       increasing community awareness of the impacts of fertiliser-use on wetlands and waterways.

Shire President John Daw said the Shire would be collaborating closely with residents and users of the area to ensure the project's success.

"A key focus of this project is facilitating meaningful conversations with the local community to provide opportunities for education and promote healthy wildlife interactions that will see the Broz Park wetland thrive," Cr Daw said.

"Like many natural areas in our Shire, the wetland at Broz Park is a biodiverse environment with its own unique ecosystem.

"Unfortunately over the years, the water quality and health of native species in the area have been negatively impacted by factors including the introduction of feral fish species to the wetland, use of fertiliser close to the waterway and the feeding of wildlife."

Cr Daw said together with the local community and project partners, Shire of Mundaring was committed to restoring the wetland to full health.

"By installing an aeration system, removing introduced fish species, planting native rushes and sedges, and engaging in community consultation, this project aims to create a healthier, more resilient wetland that will provide a safe habitat for wildlife and an enjoyable recreational area for years to come," he added.

Residents interested in learning more about the project are invited to attend a free information session from 10am to 12 noon at Broz Park on Sunday 18 October 2020.
