Community grants up for grabs

SHIRE of Mundaring is inviting community groups to apply for funding that is available through two of its annual initiatives; the Matching Grant and Milestone Event Grant.

Shire President John Daw said Matching Grants, which are offered twice a year subject to financial availability, saw funding for community projects matched dollar for dollar by the Shire.

"The Matching Grant program awards grants up to a maximum of $2000 to groups whose projects meet the needs of the local community," he said.

"Successful recipients are then required to match exactly the grant awarded by the Shire so that the grant makes up fifty per cent of the project's total funding.

"It's an excellent way to help community groups acquire new equipment, undertake training, and repair or update existing facilities," said Cr Daw.

Six local groups successfully applied for Matching Grants in the first 2017/18 round; among them was the Hills Raiders Basketball Association (HRBA) which was awarded $1300 for new laptops, software and equipment; and the Glen Forrest Primary School P&C which was granted $2000 to purchase a new oven for the school canteen.

HRBA treasurer Natalie Massam said initiatives like Matching Grant brought many benefits to community groups.

"[Grants are] very important. It shows the Shire is actively involved and supportive of all community groups; willing to improve their processes, grow their member base and assist volunteers in their roles," she said.

Also available is the $2500 Milestone Event Grant which helps community groups to celebrate significant milestones and achievements.

"The Milestone Event Grant promotes community spirit and enables groups such as sport and recreation associations, social clubs and volunteers to celebrate their history, successes and significant achievements," said Cr Daw.

Groups interested in either grant are encouraged to read the grant guidelines on the Shire website before applying.
