February in Focus

This month's Guest Councillor column has been written by West ward Councillor Ian Green.

February in Focus: Cr Ian Green

I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what your Elected Members, along with support from Shire staff, have achieved on behalf of the community.

Situations and conditions are always changing, such as the terrible bush fire season that Australia is currently experiencing. At a local level, we must be prepared to adapt and this includes recognising changing climate conditions and preparing for these changes in the future. As an example, Council recently resolved to declare a climate emergency in response to the serious and worsening risks for the Shire.

The Shire is supporting the community in many ways from 'Navigating the Aged Care System' information sessions for older residents to upgrading amenities at Lake Leschenaultia.

The Shire provides grants to many community organisations, including environmental groups, youth and adult sporting groups and local volunteer fire brigades. We also promote a strong and vibrant community by delivering our own events – such as Cinema Under Starlight evenings, Twilight Tunes concerts and the inaugural Australia Day concert – while supporting community-run events like local markets, festivals and art and culture activities.

Shire of Mundaring is equally supportive of community health. From ensuring defibrillators are available at specified locations to upgrading skate parks for youth, these efforts are aligned with the actions within the draft Community Health and Wellbeing Informing Strategy which has just been out for public comment.

The Shire regularly enhances facilities to ensure access and inclusion for all ages and abilities. Visitors to Mount Helena Aquatic Centre are now enjoying an extended season and our libraries are eSmart, which expands choice and convenience.

Council continues to put community first when it comes to prioritising how our rates spent.
