Greenmount Library celebrates 50 years

SHIRE of Mundaring's Katharine Susannah Prichard (Greenmount) Library is celebrating 50 years of operation this month.

Shire President David Lavell said the Library was celebrating with a pre-loved book sale.

"Greenmount Library opened to the public on 27 October 1966 with just 5000 books. Now we have magazines, audiobooks, and DVDs as well as,eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks, and other digital resources," he said.

"The library has been an iconic and important place for several generations of residents within our Shire who have enjoyed borrowing items, attending events and exploring new worlds from their own homes."

Cr Lavell said the book sale would act as a final celebration for the library in its current location, before a move to Boya in early 2017.

"A new library is being built at the Boya Community Centre alongside Boya Oval," he said.

"The new library will be known as Boya Library and offers a much larger space, meeting rooms, lounge area and children's corner.

"Plans are being made to transport the stained glass window from Greenmount to Boya to acknowledge the Library's history."

The 50th Anniversary Book Sale runs from 9am to 1pm on Thursday 27 October.

A range of adult and children's books, DVDs, and CDs will be available for purchase. The sale is strictly cash only.

There will also be a competition with some great prizes. People need to write in 30 words or less what our Shire libraries mean to them. Details can be found on the Shire of Mundaring Libraries website and Facebook page, or ask the library officers.
