IT'S beginning to look a lot like Christmas for students at Parkerville Primary School who are excited to hold a Twilight Christmas Market later this month in the hope of raising $70,000 to upgrade basketball courts at the school.
The inaugural event, which will be held on Saturday 24 November from 4pm to 8pm, is made possible thanks to a Community Event Grant of $1500 awarded to the school's Parents & Citizens Association (P&C) by Shire of Mundaring.
The grant, which is offered twice a year subject to funding, is awarded up to a maximum of $5000 to groups wishing to run fetes, festivals, markets, sporting or recreational carnivals, exhibitions, small performances and training related to an event.
Reanna Bennett is a parent and member of the school's P&C and said there was a lot to look forward to at the upcoming event.
"Local artist Ben Graham will be providing entertainment along with many other talented local performers. It will be a great evening with a waterslide, face painting and games for the kids, as well as a massive amount of raffle prizes to be won, which have been donated by local businesses," she said.
With second-hand toys, books, mystery jars, plants, homemade jams, cakes, an art auction, and a licensed area for the grown-ups, Mrs Bennett said the markets will have a little something for everyone.
"There will be over twelve food vendors and 60 local stalls all showcasing their products. Each class will also run a stall on the night," she said.
Parkerville Primary School is one of six successful recipients in the Shire's first 2018/19 Community Event Grant round. Mrs Bennett said the initiative is invaluable in assisting community organisations to get their events off the ground.
"Obtaining this grant from the Shire has ensured we were able to successfully run our fete. Without the grant, we would not have been able to promote our event to the wider community nor purchase the necessary equipment," she said.
"As this is a fundraising event – to upgrade our school's basketball courts – any funds received by the school to assist with the fete have meant more money can go towards our end goal.
"This initiative is very important as it provides support for our little school. Knowing that the Shire is there to assist and support is fantastic."
Shire of Mundaring President John Daw said the Community Event Grant program contributed to building a vibrant and connected community.
"Events run by our local schools contribute to making our shire an exciting place to live and Shire of Mundaring is proud to support these activities through the Community Event Grant. I encourage everyone to enjoy the Twilight Christmas Markets," he said.
Year 3 student Jasmine said she looked forward to playing "lots of games" at the event and Year 2 student Ella said she was excited "because there's all stalls and lots of things to play with." Year 2 student Zahlia said she couldn't wait to try-out the waterslide, "You get to slide down the water!" she said.
When asked what he liked to play on the school's outdoor courts, year 5 student Matthew answered "basketball times a hundred!"
The Parkerville Primary Twilight Christmas Market runs from 4pm to 8pm on Saturday 24 November at Parkerville Primary School, 16 Parker Road, Parkerville.
