Shire President Cr. John Daw joined local groups Mundaring in Transition, Glen Forrest Community Garden, Perth Hills Permies, Mundaring Organic Growers and library staff to officially launch the Mundaring Seed Library.
Operating from Mundaring's Albert Facey Memorial Library situated on Nichol Street, the Seed Library allows local growers to donate and/or exchange seeds from their own gardens with other community gardeners.
Cr.Daw said "the Seed Library is a fantastic community driven initiative developed from a collaboration between the Shire and local community groups".
"The project will have a positive impact across the community and will be an opportunity for individuals to access heritage vegetable, herb and flower seeds collected from the local area".
"The Seed Library encourages locals not only to share their produce but their skills and knowledge too" Cr Daw said.
The contents of the seed library will vary with the seasons and depend on donations. Currently 128 variety of seeds have been catalogued by library staff.
A library membership is required to borrow seed. The current limit is two packets of seed per person per season and packets have specific planting instructions written on them.
Borrowers are asked to be responsible and only borrow seeds that they intend to plant, grow, save and share. It is important that seeds are returned to the library to keep the library self-sustaining and seed donation bags are available.
The project is currently partnering with two local schools, Sacred Heart College and Silver Tree Steiner School, and it is hoped the number of schools involved will expand to encourage students to get involved in growing and collecting seeds.
In addition to the creation of a community driven and sustainable seed collection, the Seed Library supports the sharing of information and knowledge, builds on community partnerships and strengthens community interaction and engagement with the library.
