LAKE Leschenaultia, in Chidlow, is gearing up to give the Western Australian swimming community an experience to remember.
Shire of Mundaring's fresh water lake will play host to an Open Water Swimming event on Sunday,10 November, organised by the Maida Vale Masters Swimming Club. The event, which is part of the Masters WOW Series is open to all swimmers, and has been held at the iconic lake location for more than three decades.
Manager Recreation and Leisure Services Kirk Kitchin said the lake was in good shape and still full from the winter rains. "The water is also at a pleasant temperature to swim in," he said.
The Maida Vale Masters have showcased one of the Shire's most popular locations since their first event in 1986. Back then, there were only 26 swimmers! Numbers have grown significantly and it is anticipated this year will be no exception as more members of the wider swimming community come along and enjoy this wonderful location.
This year Swimming WA has nominated the Open Water event at Lake Leschenaultia as one of its targeted swims, which means it has the potential to attract up to 300 swimmers and their families. Swimmers do not need to belong to a club but they must be at least 11-years-old and able to swim without a chaperone. There is also a 400m 'Go Jump in the Lake' event which is open to non-competitive swimmers (aged 9 and over).
Mr Kitchin encouraged people attending the event to pack a picnic lunch and stay to enjoy everything the lake has to offer including canoe and stand-up paddle board hire, the stunning walking trails surrounding the lake as well as the new Mountain Bike Trails. (Reflections Café and Kiosk located on-site will be open on the day).
The popular Open Water Series is generally held at beaches throughout metropolitan and regional WA. A range of different distances will be offered including 400m, 800m, 1600m and 3200m. Start times on the day will be staggered with the 400m novice event hitting the water first at approximately 9.30am. Registrations on the day will be from 8am to 9am.
Official times will be recorded by the Blue Chip timing system. Anyone interested in attending the Lake Leschenaultia Open Water Swim, can register here.
