Registrations open for winter burning workshops

Shire of Mundaring is once again inviting residents to register their interest in free winter burning workshops.

Originally scheduled to start in April, the workshops were temporarily put on-hold amid physical distancing requirements and limits placed on public gatherings by the State Government.

As restrictions ease and the Shire moves into Stage 3 of its COVID-19 Recovery Plan, deputy chief bushfire control officer Cameron Greaves said he is happy to get the workshops up and running again.

"Reducing fuel loads is a major factor in being prepared for a bushfire," he said.

"After a devastating fire season in the eastern states last summer, it is important that we take all necessary precautions to reduce fuel loads on our properties and keep ourselves and our neighbours safe when summer returns.

"Utilising fire in mild conditions is an important skill that every resident in our urban and bush environment should know and practice. In these workshops we teach people how to safely prepare, start, and manage small mosaic fires."

Winter burning workshops are conducted by Shire officers and qualified, local volunteer brigades, commencing this month and running through to September 2020.

How to register:

To register your interest, or for more information, email Cameron Greaves at

The Shire advises that hazard reduction burns must be conducted in favourable weather conditions. For this reason, workshops are usually planned one to two weeks in advance, in accordance with the weather forecast.

Registered residents will be notified of upcoming workshops as soon as they are scheduled.
