Remembrance Day 2018

REMEMBRANCE Day this year will be especially significant marking the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice of Compiegne at the end of World War I.

Bagpipers across Australia will join an international commemoration when they play When the Battle's O'er at memorial sites around the country at 06.00am local time on 11 November, coinciding with the date and time the Armistice was actually signed in 1918.

In the Shire of Mundaring, Stuart Bradford, Pipe Major of Fremantle Sailing Club Pipes & Drums, will play the composition at the Blackboy Hill Commemorative Site on Innamincka Road in Greenmount.

Mr Bradford, who has played the bagpipes at Blackboy Hill ANZAC services over the past six years, said he was proud to play at the site once again.

"ANZAC Day and other commemorative events in our community each year are important times to reflect on the service of earlier generations and each year, as a piper, I am honoured to be part of local services and marches," he said.

"The bagpipe tune The Battle's O'er is part of the ANZAC story - a tune always in the piper's repertoire that allows us, as musicians, to continue sharing the stories of ANZAC, honour and gratitude to those who have served over the last century."

Shire President John Daw said a number of RSL clubs in the Shire of Mundaring would also hold Remembrance Day services on 11 November.

"The Shire is proud to support each of the ceremonies in our community and their historical ties to the area," said Cr Daw.

"Many places in our shire have special significance for war veterans and their families. One of these sites is Blackboy Hill in Greenmount which was originally used as a training ground for Western Australian soldiers enlisted to serve in World War I."

The commemorative site at Blackboy Hill was upgraded in 2014/15 to accommodate a larger number of visitors and, in May 2017, a War Memorial was completed at Chidlow's Village Green thanks to funding from the Shire, Lotterywest, the Chidlow Progress Association and donations.

"The Chidlow War Memorial acknowledges the area's military history and the 60,000 troops who spent time at Chidlow's army camps during World War II," added Cr Daw.
