Restricted Burning Period has begun

Residents in the Shire of Mundaring are advised that a Restricted Burning Period began today, Thursday 1 October. This means there is still a limited, or restricted, opportunity to conduct fuel reduction by burning.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Shane Purdy said with summer on its way, it was important that residents prepared their properties for the long, warm months ahead.

"Doing the right thing now by complying with burning restrictions will ensure our brigade resources are not tied up when the weather heats up," he said.

Under the Restricted Burning Period the following conditions will be in place until 30 November:

  • 1sqm piles of garden refuse may be burnt without a permit between 6pm and 11pm and must be fully extinguished before midnight. Fully extinguished means no heat, smoke or steam and no white ash present where the fire was situated
  • No more than ONE pile of garden refuse is to be burnt at any one time. If you wish to burn more than one pile after this time, please obtain a permit
  • You must obtain a permit to burn before 6pm and follow all permit conditions
  • There must be one adult person/s in attendance at all times or as specified on your permit
  • No burning if the fire danger rating is Very High or above. This applies to all burning after 6pm and with a permit.

Mr Purdy said residents could attend their local fire station to obtain a permit to burn or if they intend to carry out a 'running fire' – a fire that is allowed or managed so as to spread through an area of bushfire fuel (grass, trees, scrub) where such fuel naturally occurs, or has been deposited.

"If you would like a permit to burn piles, you can also apply for a permit via the online form on the Shire's website," he said

The form can be found here:

Additional information:

For permits needed for the weekend, forms must be submitted no later than midday Thursday.

If visiting a local fire station, please follow any social distancing and capacity limit instructions and use hand sanitiser before entering and exiting the station.

Please also ask about becoming a member while attending a brigade. Most brigades are recruiting and would be happy to explain the rewards of providing such an essential service to the community.
