Shire grant supports community concert

TWELVE community groups have received grants in the Shire's first Quick Grant round for 2018/19.

Shire President John Daw said the grants, which are offered twice a year, provide a prompt financial top-up to community groups.

"The Quick Grant program awards grants up to $500 to community groups for the purchase of small equipment, training and for use towards projects that our community will benefit from," he said.

"It's an excellent way to help community groups acquire new equipment, upskill, and achieve their goals," said Cr Daw.

Darlington Sports and Recreation Association (DaSRA) is a recent quick grant recipient. DaSRA chairman, Geoff Barker, said the group would put its $500 grant towards its upcoming Darlington Community Pavilion Oval Gig on 27 January to celebrate one-year since the completion of the Darlington Pavillion (Stage 1).

"The gig is a free concert and picnic on Darlington Oval for the community," Mr Barker said.

"Local musicians and performers will be playing from around 5.00pm to 9.30pm, including young emerging artists who will have the opportunity to perform individually as well as with professional musicians," he added.

Mr Barker said the event, which will feature special guest and world renowned guitarist Dave Hole, was sure to be an enjoyable occasion.

"Events like this provide opportunities for the community to gather and share time together in their locality which reinforces a sense of belonging," he said. "Bringing people together to relax and enjoy music from members of their community is also special and hopefully will encourage more involvement in local events."

Mr Barker said the Shire's Quick Grant was part of wider community collaborations that had made the concert possible.

"Events like this require a commitment from collaborative-minded community members and supporters. This event is no exception and we thank the work and support of Glen Whisson, Cambell Giles, Colin James, Matthew Hughes MLA, Bendigo Bank Mundaring, Cambridge Solar and Sustainability and the Shire of Mundaring who have all helped make it possible," he said.

The concert is free however DaSRA is asking for a $10 donation per adult, including children over 15 years, as a fundraiser.
