Shire of Mundaring and volunteers recognised at SALP Awards

SHIRE of Mundaring was recently recognised at the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) Awards held this month.

Hosted by Perth NRM, the ceremony celebrated SALP's 20th anniversary, and acknowledged volunteers and organisations who have dedicated their time and effort to improving environmental conservation in the Swan Canning Catchment.

Shire of Mundaring councillor Darrell Jones attended the event and accepted the Shire's certificate as a finalist for the Cam Clay Community Partner Award.

"The award acknowledges a local government, industry or other partner organisation that has demonstrated long-term commitment and support to community groups in implementing and maintaining SALP projects," said Cr Jones.

"Although the award was ultimately won by the very deserving Chittering Landcare Centre, it was excellent to see Shire of Mundaring recognised as a long-term environmental partner."

Also recognised on the night was shire local Una Bell who won the Ian Colquhoun Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to environmental conservation and education.

Un was part of SALP's inaugural funding round in 1998. Since then she has gone on to volunteer with several other friends' groups including local groups such as Jane Brook Catchment Group, which she co-founded.

Una's involvement in landcare over the years is extensive. She is Community Chair of the East Region Catchment Management Program based at the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council, and is a volunteer Research Associate at the WA Herbarium. Also a recognised local artist and author, Una was recently honoured at a Friends and Catchment Groups event held at Shire of Mundaring where she launched her new book Native Grasses of Perth Hills: a field guide to identification.

Cr Jones said it was great to see Una among the local volunteers and groups celebrated for their outstanding commitment and contribution to conservation.

"As always, I am amazed at the passion of our community and the great work they do to help protect anf rehabilitate our environment," he said.

"On behalf of the Shire I would like to congratulate Una and all the winners and finalists on their outstanding achievements."
