Celebrate and commemorate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with the Shire of Mundaring at a special NAIDOC Week event to be held on Monday, 8 July 2019.
Commencing at 10am at the Shire of Mundaring Administration Building, the free community event will include a Welcome to Country by local Senior Whadjuk Yok, Cindy Nelson, followed by the raising of the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
Attendees will then be invited to take part in a cultural art activity and sample a selection of bush tucker treats at the Civic Centre.
Shire President John Daw said NAIDOC Week provided an opportunity to formally acknowledge and appreciate the important role Indigenous culture has had, and continues to have on our community.
This year’s NAIDOC theme, “Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future,” acknowledges the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart that represent the unified position of First Nations Australians.
“The 2019 NAIDOC theme is a timely reminder that reconciliation is a journey that we’re all on together,” Cr Daw said.
“NAIDOC celebrations are an engaging way for the whole community to come together to learn about the Shire’s local Indigenous culture.”
The event is free and open to all members of the community.
