Shire of Mundaring has recently completed an overhaul of the solar panels on its administration building and civic centre.
Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Throssell said the Shire was considering installing rooftop solar panels at other buildings such as Boya Community Centre as part of its Energy and Emissions Reduction Strategy.
"The cost of solar panels has reduced over the past decade while the price of electricity has continued to rise," he said. "We encourage local businesses and residents to consider (if they haven't already) whether they can benefit from installing rooftop solar for their daytime power. It is often people's experience that the system pays for itself in electricity savings in just a few years."
There has already been a significant investment in rooftop solar panels throughout the Mundaring Town Centre. "This investment might not be overly visible to shoppers but substantial rooftop solar systems have been installed at Aldi, McDonalds, Hills Fresh and even at the local car wash," Mr Throssell said.
A large 430 kilowatt solar system has also recently been installed on the roof of Coles in Mundaring. There are over 1,100 panels, supplying solar power to a number of shops, and expected to avoid over 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. "It's great to see that so many businesses within the Shire are reducing their environmental footprint as well as their power bills," Mr Throssell said.
"A third of homes in the Shire already have solar panels but people can also buy energy efficient appliances when they need replacements and make a habit of switching things off when they aren't needed. Finding ways to use less electricity will save money as well as help the planet."
Residents who are interested in learning more about reducing their own environmental footprint can register for the upcoming Living Smart course. The course will be hosted by Shire on Mundaring, beginning Thursday, June 13 at The Hub of the Hills.
