Shire of Mundaring is proud to announce the opening of a new container refund point at Coppin Road Community Recycling Centre (formerly Waste Transfer Station) on Thursday 1 October, 2020.
As part of state-wide container deposit scheme Containers for Change, the refund point will provide residents, community groups, businesses and schools with an opportunity to engage in positive recycling habits and generate some spare change at the same time.
Run by Western Australia Return Recycle Renew Ltd. (WARRRL), Containers for Change encourages people to bring empty containers to their closest container refund point to be sorted and recycled, with 10 cents refunded for each eligible container.
Refunds are electronic and made via direct bank deposit only (no cash). Individuals can choose to donate their refund to participating charities and community groups.
The scheme aims to:
• increase recovery and recycling;
• reduce litter and landfill;
• provide opportunities for social enterprise and fund-raising for
• create opportunities for employment; and
• complement existing collection and recycling activities for recyclable waste.
Shire President John Daw said the Shire's partnership in the scheme would bring a range of benefits to residents, businesses and community groups in the Perth hills.
"We are exceptionally lucky to live, work and recreate in the Perth Hills, which is nature's garden, and proud that this scheme allows us to be part of the circular economy," he said.
"The new container refund point at Coppin Road is an outstanding addition to the Community Recycling Centre, where other successful recycling services are already in operation.
"Containers for Change will positively impact our beautiful natural environment by reducing unsightly and unhygienic litter from cans and bottles."
Cr Daw said the Shire's approved refund point was a drive through facility, designed to handle returns of all sizes to allow customers to claim their refunds effortlessly by electronic bank transfer to a nominated bank account.
"Through this scheme, Shire of Mundaring can continue to champion a sustainable future, facilitate community recycling efforts and support fundraising initiatives by local groups," he said.
The Shire will support eligible community organisations including businesses and schools to participate in the scheme through the provision of bins and a collection service.
