A Shire of Mundaring Youth grant helped Wooroloo resident Finlay McRobbie attend his first national road race in Brisbane recently.
Finlay, aged 13, was awarded a $200 Youth Grant to assist with the cost of travelling to Queensland to represent Western Australia at national level.
"Without the grant it would have been that bit harder for me and my family to go," he said.
"Overall I loved the experience... I really appreciate that the Shire gave me the Youth Grant because it helped my family financially by assisting us to afford the trip to attend the Junior Road Nationals."
Finlay raced in the U15 boys' category alongside a field of 36 riders. He finished 24th in the 10km time trail and 15th in the road race. He also finished 19th in the criterium, having achieved second place in one of the qualifying heats.
"I was really pleased with my race outcomes as this is my first National Road Race," he said.
Finlay hopes to be selected for the WA road team in 2020 and will compete at the State track cycling event at Midland Velodrome in January.
Open all year, the Youth Grant assists Shire of Mundaring residents aged 8 to 18 who have been chosen to attend State, national or international events or will be representing their institution, club or organisation in areas of sport and recreation, science, technology, arts, community service, culture and the environment.
Applications can be made at any time, but must be submitted at least one month before the event or activity will take place.
