Winners of 2021 competition

There were three categories in the 2021 competition:

  • Open Award
  • People's Choice Award
  • Best Caption

Open Award Winner: Michael Thompson

The winner of the Open Award is Michael Thompson for this photograph taken in Mundaring in the 1940s of three men with a Forestry Department motorbike with sidecar. In the photograph, Sam Thompson is standing to the left, Bob Thompson kneeling on the right, and Andy Selkirk squatting by the bike.

The judges said:

"It really tells a story with the body language of the three guys. Are they stuck out in the bush with a broken down bike? Can they fix it? Are they a long way from Forestry HQ? It looks hot, have they any water? I can almost hear the conversation! To us it depicts the life of a timber worker out in the bush as it would have been in the 1940s. Modern day workers have reliable vehicles, two way radios, mobile phones and all the other safety PPE that they are required to take into the bush."

Michael Thompson, who submitted the image, said, "'I am thrilled to win the judges' prize for Snapped 2021.  The competition recognises the importance of our community's history as well as my own family history. My grandfather and father were involved in the forestry industry, with my grandfather moving to the area in 1928. I also spent a few years working for the Shire and am very pleased to know photographs such as mine will become part of the Historical Society's Collection.'

Best Caption Winner: Geraldine Rees

Geraldine's caption was "What rooster? Where?"
