Cat and Dog Registration

When do you need to register your cat or dog?

  • All dogs over three months of age must be microchipped and registered. 
  • All cats over six months of age must be sterilised, microchipped and registered.

Please note the animal registration period runs from 1 November until the 31 October every year. Therefore from 1 June until October the registration is at half rate of the applicable fees.

Notes for pensioners an people on low income

  • The State Government has provided funding to assist and provide low cost sterilisation for cats owned by pensioners and people on low incomes.
  • Pensioners receive a discount on registration fees.

Terms and conditions

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to register an animal.
  • If your animal is sterilised, you must attach either a Veterinary Surgeon's Certificate or a Signed Statutory Declaration. Otherwise an officer may sight the ear tattoo in person (appointment required).
  • Dogs
    • The dog must be effectively confined in or at the premises identified.
    • If the dog is to be kept for the purposes of the crown, note that Dog Act 1976 does not apply.
    • You must not currently be banned from owning or keeping a dog under the Dog Act 1976 section 46A(2).
    • Your most recent tag must be displayed on your dog from the date you receive it.
  • Cats
    • Your cat is required to be sterilised and microchipped before it can be registered unless it is exempt under the Cat Act 2011.
  • Once your cat or dog is registered with the Shire, you will be issued a registration certificate, as well as a valid registration tag which your cat or dog is required to wear on its collar. Please not registration tags change in colour each year.
  • It is an offence for your cat or dog to not wear a collar with the registration tag and you can be given an on-the-spot fine of $200 for failure to do so.
