Aquatic centre dives into Waterwise program

INNOVATIVE ideas from staff at Bilgoman Aquatic Centre, in collaboration with the Water Corporation, have led to a staggering water savings of more than 3,508,000 litres in 2016/17 compared to the previous year.

The picturesque aquatic centre, based in Darlington, is owned and managed by Shire of Mundaring. Staff began participating in the Waterwise Aquatic Centre program (a state-wide water saving initiative) about two years ago.

Centre Manager Chris Blankley said the team investigated many strategies to help reduce water usage. "We implemented a range of initiatives including reducing flow rates in ablutions, the introduction of single flush toilets and simple measures such as using brooms and blow vacuums for cleaning rather than hoses," he said. "We also used water wise plants and mulch in the gardens in addition to regularly monitoring general usage and evaporation. Also, some sections of lawn have been replaced with synthetic turf to help minimise water usage."

Mr Blankley said lots of small changes had made a big impact. "Since we started the program a couple of years ago, following the renovation of the aquatic centre, we have saved in excess of 4,000,000 litres of water," he said.

"We're very pleased with the result and look forward to introducing more water-saving initiatives over the next 12 months".

The Waterwise Council Program aims to support councils to improve water efficiency in their operations and liveability in their communities. It has helped to save more than 700 million litres since 2008 which is enough water to fill about 280 Olympic-sized pools.
