Shire of Mundaring residents aged 60 and above are set to move up a storm with six weeks of free exercise classes, as part of a new 'Move your Body' campaign.
Shire of Mundaring, in partnership with Stay on Your Feet, Injury Matters and various local businesses, will run activities such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba Gold and Senior Fit in different locations around the shire, starting Tuesday 13 April.
Shire President, John Daw, said the campaign would bring much needed awareness about falls prevention to the community.
"As we get older it becomes imperative that we keep moving to maintain muscle strength and balance to prevent falls," he said.
"These programs offer older residents a chance to exercise in a comfortable and inclusive environment, with many of the classes utilising one-on-one training."
According to the 2020 Western Australian Falls Report, produced by the Department of Health and Injury Matters, falls were the leading cause of injury hospitalisations and emergency department attendances in 2018.
In addition, patients spent an average 6.3 days in hospital for fall related admissions.
Cr Daw encouraged all eligible residents to take part in the specifically tailored classes.
"An introductory information session will be held at Brown Park Community Centre in Swan View from 10am to 12noon on Wednesday 31 March," he said.
"This program provides a great opportunity to get out and about, take a class with a friend and make some new ones, while strengthening your body and learning the best ways to prevent falls.
"There's nothing like feeling confident while being active and I hope this campaign gives more people the chance to experience that feeling for longer."
