Shire welcomes new Youth Advisory Group

APPLICATIONS to join Shire of Mundaring's Youth Advisory Group are coming in thick and fast.

The purpose of the group is to allow young people in the region to play a greater role in making decisions about matters which directly affect their life.

Members will be pivotal in determining the type of programs to be delivered in the community via a Youth Engagement Partnership Fund which will be co-ordinated by the Shire.

The group will comprise up to 15 young people, aged between 12 and 18. To be eligible, you must live in the Shire, attend an educational institution or work in the area. Or you might participate in a Mundaring-based organisation.

Shire President Cr John Daw said he was pleased to see a strong level of interest in the new initiative. "The Youth Advisory Group is a fantastic opportunity for bright young people to develop their leadership abilities," he said. "They will gather ideas, aspirations and concerns from their peers and bring this information to their meetings".

Youth Community Engagement Facilitator, Penny McGrory, will play an important role in assisting the YAG in its interaction with Council as the Youth Informing Strategy states there is a requirement for the group to have direct input into its policies.

"Young people have important things to say about many topics, not just policies directly relating to youth," Cr Daw said.

Council's representative Jason Russell said the group would provide an ideal forum in which its members could shape their community. "Young people bring forward different ideas and perspectives on all aspects of life," Cr Russell said. "They often have strong feelings and opinions on events, programs and services in the region".

"The Youth Advisory Group will undoubtedly help Council make better-informed decisions for the benefit of future generations while developing the skills of our future leaders".

An interactive information session, Lake Lesh Sesh, will be held on Saturday, 9 March at Lake Leschenaultia between 11am-1pm. The session will provide an opportunity to meet new people and find out more about joining the group in a fun and relaxed environment.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to the Youth Community Engagement Facilitator, Penny McGrory on 9290 6790 or via email - cefy@mundaring.wa.gov.au
