Youth consultation efforts commended

SHIRE of Mundaring was awarded a Commendation in the Children's Consultation category at the 2019 Local Government Policy Awards last week.

The annual awards, hosted by the Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia (PHAIWA), recognise local governments who demonstrate innovation while engaging with children to develop new policies and projects.

The Shire was commended for its commitment to ensuring young people were consulted on key issues while developing its latest Youth Informing Strategy.

Over 500 young people and community members were consulted through a series of workshops, an online survey and via a consultation team who engaged with young people at a local About YOU Health Expo. Information collected during the process helped form the framework for a new Youth Services Model which aims to improve access to youth services, encourage young people to be physically and mentally healthy and increase their sense of belonging.

These activities are complemented by a new Youth Engagement Partnership Fund (YEPF), approved by Council in 2018, and designed to financially assist community groups to run programs or events that increase life skills and build resilience of young people within the Shire.

A youth advisory group – known as the Youth C.R.E.W. (Communicate, Represent, Engage and Wonder) and comprising 12 to 18 year olds – was also established in 2019 to provide direct feedback to the Shire and empower young people to have a strong voice in their community. As part of their role, the Youth C.R.E.W., assesses and makes recommendations on all Youth Engagement Partnership Funds applications.

Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Throssell said the Shire was honoured to be recognised by the PHAIWA.

"This commendation reflects the fantastic consultation work being undertaken by our Engagement Team in the area of youth consultation, public health consultation and youth engagement and partnerships," he said.

"It also supports our commitment to ensuring all members of our community feel empowered to have their say about the way the community is shaped both now and into the future."
