All-terrain wheelchair upgrade for popular lake

People with mobility impairments will have greater access to community and social activities at Lake Leschenaultia thanks to a wheelchair upgrade.

Shire of Mundaring has received a $6000 grant from the Department of Communities’ All-Terrain Wheelchair Grants Program to replace an aging all-terrain wheelchair at the lake.

Shire of Mundaring President James Martin said the wheelchair would complement recent accessibility upgrades at the lake.

“An all-terrain wheelchair is akin to a 4WD of wheelchairs,” he said.

“Purpose built and designed, it enables access to outdoor environments traditional wheelchairs can’t go.”

The previous chair has been in use at the lake for over ten years.

“The upgrade will provide greater access to the beach, water and pathways at the lake for people with mobility constraints to enjoy the natural environment while being pushed along in the chair,” Cr Martin added.

Lake Leschenaultia is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

The Shire has been working hard to improve the amenity to ensure it is accessible for the wider community.

Last year the Shire added two new accessible car bays and accessible paths, built larger picnic areas with accessible picnic tables and added an additional BBQ.

Visitors are asked to register their interest to hire the wheelchair for free ahead of their visit to the lake. Email allterrainchair@mundaring.wa.gov.au
