Wheels Inc. recently received $2000 in funding through the Shire of Mundaring’s Community Grants Program (Matching Grant Fund). The funding will go towards the installation of a concrete pad and shed to house the group's bus and trailer.

Going strong since 2010, Wheels Inc. offers senior residents 55 years and over several opportunities to travel and take part in social activities such as eating out, going to shows and attending festivals. This 40 strong group actively engage in fundraising activities to support their club, with over 50 per cent of the cost of the bus coming from fundraising efforts.

Wheels Inc. President Sally Roberts said she felt their job was done if they could provide support to someone during a difficult time.

“Having fun within a group setting means many seniors can continue to enjoy essential social connections with others and continue to have a great quality of life. This is so important, especially in later years when some people may otherwise be lonely and stuck at home for whatever reason.”

Sally, who usually parks the 14-seater bus at her home is pleased the group received funding to match their own fundraising efforts towards the new bus shelter. Once complete it will be easier for other members and community groups to access the bus when needed.

‘It’s future proofing the club and making sure other drivers can access the vehicle easily. The Shire’s grant program is a great idea,” she said.

Shire President James Martin agreed with Sally.

“The way the grants program has been structured gives our community groups a great financial resource and is also a great tool to be able to plan future projects and activities,” he said.

“There is a wealth of information available to groups wanting to apply for a grant.  From Grant Writing Guidelines, tips and useful links to a set of frequently asked questions. Our Community Capacity Building Officer can also assist groups who may want to brainstorm ideas or who have any questions.”

The next round of Community Event, Matching and Milestone Grants will open on Friday 3 February.
