Shire of Mundaring residents interested in representing the community on Council are encouraged to nominate as a candidate for the 2023 Local Government Ordinary Elections.
Nominations for Council will open on Thursday 31 August until 4pm on Thursday 7 September, with the following vacancies available:
- Office of directly elected Shire President (4 year term, expiring 2027)
- East Ward Councillor (4 year term, expiring 2027)
- Central Ward Councillor (4 year term, expiring 2027)
Shire President James Martin said he encouraged residents thinking of nominating to put their hands up to represent their community.
“Being a Councillor is a highly rewarding experience and a great way to make a difference in your local area,” he said.
“Being elected to Council, you can make a difference in shaping the strategic direction and future of the shire.”
Following the recent reforms to the Local Government Act 1995, three key electoral reforms will also be implemented at the October elections
One of the key changes will see the reduction in the number of Councillors from 12 to eight, plus a Shire President, to align with the size of the population.
The second change that will be introduced at the elections will require the public election of the Shire President.
The third change will see the introduction of optional preferential voting. This is consistent with State and Federal elections and means electors are not required to provide all their preferences in casting their vote.
Candidate Information Sessions
Residents interested in nominating for Council are invited to a Candidate Information Session at 6pm on Wednesday 23 August in the Committee Room at the Shire’s Administration Building.
The session will be facilitated by CEO, Jonathan Throssell and will explain:
- how to become a council member
- the role of the council members
- what commitment is required
- how to nominate
- what you will be paid; and
- much more.
There will also be a presentation from a current council member and opportunities to ask questions during the evening.
To register your attendance please email shire@mundaring.wa.gov.au by Friday 18 August.
