Shire of Mundaring Council endorsed its new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at its November Ordinary Council Meeting. The Innovate RAP 2022 to 2024 is a collaborative plan informed through strong Aboriginal engagement and stakeholder consultation and developed with guidance from Reconciliation Australia.

Actions contained within the plan meet both community’s vision and aspiration and the accreditation standards of Reconciliation Australia.

Shire President James Martin said the Reconciliation Action Plan seeks to achieve the Shire’s unique vision for reconciliation.

“This RAP is intended to gain a better understanding of the ways in which we can contribute towards better outcomes for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” he said.

“The actions outlined in this plan build upon a number of reconciliation initiatives already in place. The commitments within the RAP will allow the Shire to innovatively enhance this work. This will help us gain a deeper understanding of the sphere of our influence and establish the best approach to advance reconciliation.”

“I would like to thank Reconciliation Australia for their guidance, and the RAP Reference Group for their leadership throughout the development of the RAP. Additionally, the information and feedback gathered from Traditional Owners, Aboriginal community members and local stakeholders has been vital in formulating the RAP and I thank them wholeheartedly for their input.”

The RAP outlines the following priorities:

  • Developing and Strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Engaging staff and stakeholders in reconciliation
  • Developing and piloting innovative strategies to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Having received formal endorsement for its RAP, the Shire is now officially accredited by Reconciliation Australia and is recognised as a member of the RAP network.
