The highly anticipated $380,000 Chidlow Skate Park was officially declared open for use at a small ceremony on Saturday 19 March.

Shire of Mundaring Councillors; the Honourable Ken Wyatt Hasluck MP; Ms Jessica Shaw MLA Member for Swan Hills; members of the Chidlow Progress Association; and the Chidlow Skate Park Committee were in attendance.

Shire President James Martin said the Chidlow Skate Park was the result of a collaborative project between the Chidlow Progress Association and the Shire of Mundaring.

“Four years ago a group of young people wrote a letter and started a petition with 500 signatures actively seeking support from the Shire, State and Federal government representatives for the park,” he said.

The Shire agreed to support the initiative following the identifications of a site at the Chidlow Village Green and incorporated the project in its Strategic Community Plan.

Funding sourced collaboratively

“The Shire has worked collaboratively with the Chidlow Progress Association Skate Park Committee to source funding to assist in this initiative.”

The Chidlow Skate Park Committee assisted Shire staff in the design process of this modern skate park.

The state-of-the-art park was partly funded by a $200,000 funding boost from the Shire’s Capital Works Program with another $150,000 coming from Hasluck MP Ken Wyatt.

An extra $30,000 for sun shelters was funded by Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw.

The Chidlow community raised $7000 which is hoped to cover the cost of a future skate skills workshop, once COVID-19 restrictions lift.

Cr Martin said the venue would be a catalyst to promote a healthy community life where youth and older people can socialise, have fun, develop new skills and make new friends.

“The skate park will not only benefit local skate, scooter and bike enthusiasts, but it is an asset to the entire community,” he said. “I hope many generations of Hills families get to enjoy this facility.”

Shelters and landscaping will be completed in the coming months.
