Where suitable sub-grade materials (ie: gravels) exist, the site is to be excavated to a depth being the sum of the depth of the paving blocks plus 30mm, below the required finished level.

Where the sub-grade is not of sufficient bearing strength to adequately support the paving under load, a minimum of 100mm consolidated thickness of approved base course material (ie. approved road making gravel or road base) is to be spread, rolled, water-bound, and levelled to conform to proposed finished shape and grade of crossover.


Prior to commencement of block laying, 30mm of sand is to be spread over sub-grade or base course. This is to be screened to level, graded and compacted. Gaps between paving bricks are to be a maximum of 2mm.


After the bricks have been laid they should be consolidated using a plate compactor. Two passes are required to achieve the desirable amount of compaction and uniform surface.

Joint filling

Prior to compaction, joints should be filled with a fine sand, free from salts and contamination. Bricklayers sand is suitable and should be brushed into joints. This may need to be repeated after an interval of several days.


Where the road is unkerbed the crossover shall be supported by a concrete footing at the carriageway. A concrete footing is also required under the header course on each side of the crossover in all cases.

If the crossover construction is not continuous with the internal driveway, the concrete footing is also to be constructed on the property boundary.

The concrete footing to be strong enough to withstand vehicle impact and prevent lateral movement of the paving bricks.

Where an additional sub-grade has been placed, this should extend beneath the full width of the concrete footing. Kerbing is not to stand proud of paving blocks so as to be hazardous for pedestrians.


It is important that adequate surface drainage be developed. A minimum grade of 2% is desirable.

Laying pattern and brick standards

The Herringbone laying pattern is to be used for brick paving. Minimum thickness of 60mm solid clay brick. Second-hand or reject bricks are not acceptable.

Site tidying

On completion all surplus material is to be removed and the site of the works left clean and tidy. The edges of the crossover are to be backfilled with suitable material.

Drainage pipes (if applicable)

All drainage pipes are to be ‘X’ class concrete and shall be spigot and socket rubber ring joint type unless otherwise authorised by the shire.

Minimum pipe size is 300mm wide diameter or as determined by the Shire. Reject pipes or second-hand pipes are not acceptable.

Headwalls (if applicable)

Headwalls are to be constructed from in situ concrete, precast concrete, stone or brick.
