Join West Australian author Bernice Barry as she discusses her historical novel Sarah Evans with Elizabeth Lewis.

Born into poverty, illiterate, and living on the streets of eighteenth century London, the real Sarah Evans appears as no more than a whisper on the pages of history. A prison record signed with an ‘X’ is one of the few fleeting references to her existence, but in this uplifting reconstruction of Sarah Evans' remarkable story, it is the power of thoughts and words that shapes her life, not the hardship she has known. And it is friendship that teaches her the most important kind of freedom: liberty of mind.

Books will be available for purchase on the day.

Bookings are essential via Humanitix for this free event. Light refreshments will be available. You are encouraged to bring your own keep cup for tea/coffee or water.

Please let us know if you have any access requirements.

About the author: Bernice Barry is a West Australian writer and historian with a background in education. Her previous books include historical fiction and non-fiction, reflecting her passion for discovering and telling women’s stories where truth has been obscured by time. Originally from Cornwall in the UK, Bernice has lived for twenty-five years on Wadandi country near Wooditjup/Margaret River, researching West Australian history, nurturing a native garden in the bush and spending as much time as possible at the place where land meets ocean. She is a regular speaker on a wide range of topics from wildflowers and botany, writing and publishing, to history and heritage. ‘Sarah Evans’ is her first novel and the next, also historical fiction, will be published by Fremantle Press in 2026.
