Playgroups Learn, Laugh and Get Prepared

Children and families across the shire recently enjoyed a series of playgroup incursions run by Shire of Mundaring’s Emergency Management team.

The sessions were held during Child Protection Week and introduced children to the protective behaviours message: “We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is.” This included learning about emergency networks such as firefighters, police, ambulance officers and Kids Helpline.

Through story time with a specially adapted reading of Birdie and the Fire, complete with hand puppets, and interactive exercises, children discovered how to feel safe and supported if something scary happens. The highlight for many was a close-up visit from a fire truck, with the chance to explore the equipment and meet local volunteer firefighters. Parents were encouraged to join in the fun, with giveaways including a take-home “my important documents” folder filled with local information along with activities designed to start conversations about safety at home.

Shire President Paige McNeil said it’s wonderful to see our youngest community members learning where to turn when they need help.

“These sessions lay the groundwork to build resilience and trust that strengthens our whole community,” President McNeil said.

“These playgroup activities remind us that preparedness begins with simple conversations. They equip families with practical tools and the confidence to respond calmly during emergencies. As we head into bushfire season, I encourage all families to take time to create and practice their Bushfire Plan, and to share it with neighbours, so everyone is informed and better prepared together.”

While the sessions were informal, anecdotal feedback showed they were a valuable way to:

  • help children build familiarity with emergency services in a safe, friendly setting
  • reassure parents and carers that local volunteers are approachable and community-minded
  • create opportunities for casual but important conversations about bushfire safety and preparedness
  • show that learning about emergencies can be playful and positive.

By engaging children early and building trust with families, the Shire is fostering resilience and strengthening community connections long before an emergency occurs.

Through creative activities and positive storytelling, these sessions demonstrated how preparedness and protective behaviours can be woven into everyday community life.

Most importantly, they reinforced a simple but powerful message: in times of uncertainty, children and families have people to turn to. Helpers, whether they are parents, carers, firefighters or other community members, are there to support them.
