Rabbits are a major pest across Australia and have a significant impact on both the environment and agriculture. They compete with livestock and native wildlife for food, destroy crops and natural vegetation, and contribute to soil erosion through overgrazing and burrowing.

Domestic breeds of rabbits can be kept legally in Western Australia without a permit, however keeping wild-type rabbits is prohibited.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) provides a wealth of information on rabbits, including:

  • How to identify rabbits
  • Rabbit behaviour and breeding habits
  • Why rabbits have been so successful in WA
  • The types of damage they cause
  • Effective rabbit control methods
  • Rules around keeping rabbits in WA.
