Local school leaders and emergency services came together this month for the Principal’s Pre-Season Workshop, a hands-on session to help schools and their communities get ready for the bushfire season.
The event brought together 37 participants, presenters and observers to share local knowledge, learn from recent mitigation work and explore new ways to strengthen bushfire planning in schools.
Topics included the upcoming seasonal forecast, case studies from local schools and new engagement resources designed to help teachers and parents talk about preparedness with students. Participants also heard about opportunities through a proposed Land for Wildlife program for schools.
A standout moment was the BIG MAP exercise, generously provided by Disaster Relief Australia. This interactive activity encouraged participants to think practically, problem-solve together and test their response to a realistic emergency scenario.
Shire of Mundaring President Paige McNeil said the workshop showed how working together helps everyone prepare more effectively.
“The Shire is proud to support our schools as they plan and prepare for bushfire season,” President McNeil said.
“When schools, agencies and the Shire work together, we strengthen our shared ability to stay safe and respond quickly when it matters most. It was great to see so much energy and collaboration in the room.”
The Shire thanks all participating schools and agencies for their commitment to keeping our community informed and prepared.
