La Salle College student Shaq Inverway has discovered confidence, purpose and a deeper connection to nature through his work experience with Shire of Mundaring.
A boarding student from the remote First Nations community of Billiluna in the Kimberley, Shaq spends his school terms in Perth and returns home during the holidays. This year, he has been completing his work experience with Shire of Mundaring’s Parks and Environment team.
“I have enjoyed working outside with Noah and Kristen. They have taught me how to look after the environment. I enjoy planting trees and being in the bush,” Shaq said.
Deputy Principal Shannon Smith said the program gives students the chance to explore new pathways and gain real-world experience.
“The work experience program provides a variety of opportunities for students to engage in personalised programs to add clarity to their potential career pathways,” she said.
“The program allows for students’ own personal growth through hands-on learning experiences and a sense of belonging. We are grateful to all businesses for the opportunities afforded to our students.”
Shire President Paige McNeil said opportunities like this play an important role in helping young people find their passions while strengthening the connection between schools, local government and the community.
“It’s so important to open doors for young people and help them see the range of opportunities that exist in local government,” President McNeil said.
“Placements like Shaq’s show how meaningful these experiences can be in both helping students find what they love, as well as building confidence, skills and a sense of connection to community.”
Shaq hopes to one day return to his community to work as a ranger, caring for Country and sharing his knowledge with others.
