Brooking Rd Extension Project and Falls Road Bridge Replacement

Our Vision

The Brooking Road Extension will create a safer, more connected road network for the Parkerville area. The project will improve access for residents, support emergency response, and provide safer travel for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The project will also balance infrastructure improvements with environmental care. Design elements will protect Jane Brook and include tree planting to maintain local habitat and amenity.

Why This Project Matters

The extension of Brooking Road is a key infrastructure project for the area. It will improve traffic flow, safety and connectivity for the local community.

The new link will connect Brooking Road at Owen Road to link with Duncombe Road at Richardson Road. This will provide a more direct route for residents and emergency services.

The project will also help reduce traffic on the parallel route of Roland Road, Byfield Road and Seaborne Street. These roads currently experience higher traffic volumes and have a history of accidents due to sharp horizontal and vertical curves.

Improving the local road network will help support a growing community while making travel safer and more efficient.

This project is fully funded through State and Federal Government road infrastructure grants.

What’s Planned

The project includes several major infrastructure improvements.

  • Extension of Brooking Road from Owen Road to Richardson Road.
  • Construction of a new road and bridge box culvert crossing over Jane Brook.
  • Replacement of the ageing timber bridge on Falls Road with a new large bridge box culvert crossing.
  • Installation of a median with both raised and painted sections.
  • Safe staged crossing points for users of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail.
  • New pedestrian pathways and lighting at key intersections.
  • Tree planting within the median and nearby areas to improve canopy and amenity.
  • Drainage systems designed using water sensitive urban design to manage stormwater and protect Jane Brook.

Some tree clearing is required to construct the road. This will be offset by new planting in nearby locations.

Environmental studies found no rare flora on site. No trees contained hollows or potential hollows suitable for black cockatoos. The understorey vegetation was suitable only for transient fauna.

Tree planting will maintain food sources for black cockatoos and other wildlife.

Project Timeline

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be new footpaths?

Yes. A new footpath will be installed along Brooking Road from Richardson Road to Riley Road. This will help Harmony Estate residents walk safely to Parkerville Primary School.

A second footpath extension will continue along Richardson Road from Buttercup Road to Roland Road.

How high will the new road be?

Most of the road will follow existing ground levels. Some sections will be raised to ensure safe gradients for vehicles.

The road will rise up to 1.5 metres at the Jane Brook crossing. It will rise up to 2.9 metres at a low point near Richardson Road.

What will the road layout look like?

The new road will include two traffic lanes separated by a median.

The median will provide safer crossing points for the heritage trail. It will also create safer access for vehicles entering driveways and allow space for tree planting.

What will the speed limit be?

The speed limit on the extension will be 50 km/h. This matches the existing speed limits on surrounding sections of Brooking Road.

The nearby 80 km/h section closer to Great Eastern Highway will be reviewed with Main Roads WA after construction.

Will traffic increase in the area?

Currently Seaborne Street carries about 10 percent more traffic than Brooking Road.

Once the extension is complete, traffic is expected to balance across Brooking Road and Seaborne Street. Overall traffic conditions are not expected to significantly change.

Traffic will be monitored after the project is completed.

What will happen at the Heritage Trail crossing?

The split in the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail east of Falls Road will be addressed. The project will create a single, wider and more direct trail connection on the western side of Falls Road.

What happens when the Falls Road bridge is closed?

The Falls Road bridge will be closed for a period in 2026 during construction.

Glidden Road will be upgraded with some road widening to support two-way traffic. These upgrades will occur before the bridge demolition begins.
