Remember to leave landfill as a last resort and try and give your unwanted quality items a second life by gifting, swapping, selling or repairing them. 

Sell and share 

There are several ways you can sell or share quality items. 

Buy Nothing Project 

You can join via the Buy Nothing App or Buy Nothing groups on Facebook to offer items that you no longer need to your community. Everything on Buy Nothing must be gifted for free. 

Facebook Marketplace

Platform to buy and sell items. 

Gumtree

Platform to buy and sell items.

Gifting apps 

Gifting app as an alternative to the Buy Nothing Project allowing you to gift items to those who need them in your community. Everything must be gifted for free on apps like Blezz and Olio, GIVIT. 

Swap meets and markets

Depending on the volume of items you have, you can investigate local swap meet or market events to sell quality items. 

Drop off points for reuse, recycling and disposal 

GREAT Sorts take items to appropriate drop off points for reuse, recycling and/or safe disposal. 

Please store and transport items safely. If you are donating items for reuse or recycling, check first what is accepted, including any quality and quantity requirements, and place donations in the designated receptacle at the drop-off point. 

Leaving excessive amounts, unusable items, or donations outside the receptacle may be considered illegal dumping. Many places that accept donations are charities and not-for-profit organisations, so please help reduce their costs by only leaving items they can use. 

Books 

Reuse 

  • Check if your local op shops accept books.  
  • Find second hand stores or book exchanges which accept books. 
  • Drop off your quality unwanted books for passers-by to enjoy at a Street Library near you. 

Bicycles

Reuse

  • Dismantle go through hundreds of bikes a term to provide their BikeRescue program to at-risk young people. Mountain and BMX bikes are the most utilised, however all bikes are put to good use. Dismantle are unable to collect bike donations but you can drop by the workshop any time Monday - Friday, 9AM-5PM. Contact Dismantle. 
  • Bicycles for Humanity (WA) is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation that uses donated bikes to help alleviate poverty through sustainable transport. Check the Bicycles for Humanity website for more information about bikes accepted and drop off locations. 
  • Mundaring Community Men’s Shed help give old bicycles new life by servicing and repairing bikes, fixing and reselling unwanted bikes or donation to Bicycles for Humanity. Contact Mundaring Community Men’s Shed 

Recycling 

  • 99 Bikes environmental initiatives offer tyre & tube recycling at WA stores and partner with Bicycles for Humanity accepting donated bikes through their Donate Your Old Bike Program. Find your nearest 99 Bikes store. 

Cardboard

  • Before collapsing large cardboard boxes for recycling, offer them to your local Buy Nothing Community, someone moving house may be able to use them.

  • Fluorescent lamps & tubes and light globes and can be taken to Shire of Mundaring Community Recycling Centres in the free entry recycling area (proof of residency required). 
  • Fluorescent lamps & tubes (CFLs) can be taken to Red Hill Waste Management Facility as part of the WA Household Hazardous Wast Program (fees and charges may apply to non CFLs).

Plastic lids 

Recycling

  • Container for Change now accept and recycle lids from eligible 10¢ container. You can separate lids from your containers and bring them with you to the refund point or leave them on. Find Containers for Change return points. 
  • Collection bins for plastic lids not accepted by Containers for Change are available at the Shire of Mundaring Community Recycling Centres from 1 July 2026. 
  • Plastic lids larger than the palm of your hand can go in the household recycle bin.

Polystyrene

  • Polystyrene packaging should be kept out of general waste and taken to Shire of Mundaring Community Recycling Centres free entry recycling area (proof of residency required). 

Printer Cartridges

  • Drop off household printer cartridges at Cartridges 4 Planet Ark collection point.  
  • Empty laser and inkjet cartridges can be recycled at all Officeworks stores and participating Australia Post, Cartridge World, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, JB Hi-Fi, Office National and Office Products Depot outlets (some boxes may not be visible or on display due to limited store floor space. In these cases, please ask the staff at the counter and hand your cartridges directly to them). Find Cartridges 4 Planet drop off point.

Sports shoes or equipment

  • Fair Game collect sports shoes or equipment that are still in good clean useable condition, to redistribute to those who needs them to equip people to get active and keep moving. Find Fair Game donation bin.

Reuse 

  • If you have surplus quality fabric, craft, paper, art and sewing supplies try a Hills Fabric & Craft De-Stash which is a pop-up event where you can swap, buy and sell and fabric, craft and sewing supplies. Find out more information about Hills Fabric & Craft De-stash. 
  • Offer stationery and art & craft supplies on Local Buy Nothing Groups. 
  • Contact local primary schools to see if they are interested in accepting quality items as a donation.

Technology 

Before you give away, sell, recycle or dispose of devices, including laptops and computers, mobile phones, motherboards and circuit boards, hard drives, USBs, and CDs/DVDs, make sure you remove any personal information. Visit the manufacturer’s website for support removing any personal information. 

 

Repair

  • Before replacing tech items, see if they can be repaired by an electrician or specialty repairer.

Reuse 

  • Getting new tech? Why not consider buying quality pre-owned devices through programs such as ReDial. 
  • Selling used technology via phone cycle, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree. 
  • Give away tech items to local Buy Nothing Community or by GIVIT. 

Recycling

  • Officeworks accept trade-ins for phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, Apple AirPods, Apple Pencil, Apple TV, Fitbits, GoPro and gaming consoles. 
  • Broken and beyond repair electronic items such as electronic appliances, computers and TVs can be taken to Shire of Mundaring Community Recycling Centres e-waste collection bin in the free entry recycling area (proof of residency required).

Textiles 

Reuse

  • Quality clothing items in good condition can be reused in the community.  
    • Attend a clothes swap event to share your items and refresh your wardrobe. 
    • Donate quality items to your local op shop. 
    • Sell quality items online through Facebook Marketplace, Depop or eBay. 
    • Offer quality items to your local Buy Nothing Community. 

  

  • Bed, bath and kitchen textiles can also be reused and recycled, leaving landfill only as a last resort. 
    • Cut up old textiles for cleaning rags and cleaning cloths. 
    • Old towels and flat sheets can be donated to local vets/wildlife hospital. Contact your local vet or wildlife hospital to see if they are accepting them. 
    • Some mechanics accept old towels, clothing, sheets and other textiles so they can use them as rags. Contact your local mechanic to see if they will accept them. 

 

Recycle 

  • Clothing retailer such as Zara, H&M and UNIQLO have free recycling programs in selected stores. Check with individual retailers for items accepted and collection points. 
  • Brands like Patagonia has a trade-in program for its own pre-loved clothing, where customers can return their worn-out or damaged clothing for store credit. Any clothes that can be repaired are mended and sold in Patagonia's secondhand shop. 
  • Upparel collect worn out shoes, clothing and bed linen for recycling. For $35, you can fill a box containing 10kg of clothing and have it collected from your home. Upparel will sort the items and turn them into a new product that can be used in acoustic panelling and packaging. 

 

Disposal 

  • Wet, mouldy, or chemically contaminated textiles should be disposed of via general waste bin. 

Toys 

Reuse

  • Before you throw unwanted quality toys in your general waste bin, see if there is a reuse option. 
      • Offering them to local Buy Nothing Community. 
      • Check if your local toy library accepts donations of quality toys in good condition. 
      • Donate toys to a local op shop. 
      • Search for community pop-up toy swap events. 

         

        Recycling

        • Toys for Joy is a recycling program for toys, with the goal is to reduce landfill by recycling eligible preloved toys. Toys for Joy collection bins are available in every BIG W store.  

         

        Disposal

        • Broken and damaged toys that cannot be reused or recycles should be disposed of in your general waste bin. Large toys which do not fit in kerbside general waste bin should be disposed of during Bulk Verge Collection or taken to Shire of Mundaring Community Recycling Centres. Remove batteries from toys before disposal.
